SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS, INC.
SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT AND APPLICATION
In 1993, the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club was founded in Chicago by Ken “Dream Maker” Thomas to socialize men and women who shared similar ideals and the common bond of motorcycling. The name was chosen to uphold and perpetuate the heroic legend of the original Buffalo Soldiers and the legacy of excellence of the African American soldiers who followed.
Mission of the Southwest Illinois Chapter
We are a family oriented, non-profit organization comprised of males and females from the military, law enforcement and other professional affiliations, (Active and Retired) who are dedicated to the sport of motorcycling. We strive to become a highly respected and notable motorcycle club that our community, as well as other organizations, will seek out for support.
Our Vision
- Educate others and ourselves about the history and contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers, notably the 9th & 10th Cavalry.
- Demonstrate and promote safe individual and group riding experiences.
- Provide positive role models to the youth in our community.
- Support the charitable needs of the community in the local and Great Lakes Frontier.
The Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Southwest Illinois, Inc., announces their 2012 Scholarship Award. The scholarship awards One thousand dollars ($1,000.00) to a graduating African American Senior that attends the surrounding Metro area high schools. If selected, the Scholarship may be used at any Higher Educational Institution thayou attend.
Selection Criterion
Students will be selected for the scholarship based on the following criterion:
- Graduating African American Senior
- Attending a metro area high school
- Academic achievement: minimum 2.5 GPA (official school transcript)
- Typed essay
- Acceptance to an institution of higher education.
- Two letters of recommendation
- A letter of introduction (identifying yourself and your contribution to school and community, your family background and your educational need.)
- Provide a brief summary of how you plan to use the scholarship funding if selected.
- Application
- Timely submission of required documentation (Deadline Monday, February 27, 2012)
Essay Criterion
Applicants must complete a 500 word essay in the following format:
- Typewritten
- Double Spaced
- 12 Point Font
- Times New Roman Font
- 1 inch margins
The essay must be submitted on one of the following topics:
- In What Ways Does the Buffalo Soldier Legacy Inspire Me?
- The stories of the Buffalo Soldiers exemplify many positive character traits. Please provide examples from the lives of Buffalo Soldiers (living or deceased) and write on four of those traits and how they can be used to help mold or develop your life?
- Why is it necessary that we pass on the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers to future generations?
- In What Ways does the Buffalo Soldier Legacy Inspire Me to be a Better Person and Citizen?
- The Congressional Medal of Honor is presented by the President of the United States in the name of Congress. This is the highest award for valor presented to military members that are recognized for having performed the highest degree of bravery and self-sacrifice on the battlefield. Please write on one of the Buffalo Soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor and what can be learned from his life and/or efforts, and commitment to duty.
Transcript and Recommendations
One copy of all official transcripts (unopened) must be mailed to the Scholarship Committee. Additionally, letters of recommendation from two of the following must be included in the scholarship application packet (Ex. 1 teacher, 1 minister).

- Community Leader
Completed scholarship packets must be mailed and postmarked before Monday, February 27, 2012.
Award Confirmation
The Scholarship Committee will choose the scholarship recipient. The scholarship recipient and school officials will be notified via certified mail as soon as practical, following selection of the recipient. A representative from the Chapter will recognize the recipient at an appropriate school sponsored function – to be jointly determined by the school’s point of contact and the committee. Finally, the recipient will be recognized at the Chapter’s May 2012 meeting.
Scholarship awards will be mailed, via certified letter, directly to the institution chosen by the recipient at the start of school, in August 2012.

The Counselor is to be used as the school’s point of contact for validating the entry and arranging the opportunity to recognize the student.
Mailing Packet and Official Transcripts
Completed applications will contain:
- Application
- Letter of Introduction
- Essay
- Official transcript (can be provided separately, must be unopened)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Planned use of scholarship funding
- College acceptance letter
